Silicone Makeup Sponge: Hot or Not?

Can we all agree that the makeup world is a little weird these days? You can’t get on Instagram without seeing someone contouring their face with a vegetable or using a spoon to get the perfect winged liner. Its weird. When I saw the silicone makeup sponge, I thought that same thing. Weird, but someone is manufacturing and selling this product, so I am going to give it a try. Why not?

In my mind, the idea of a silicone makeup sponge didn’t really make a lot of sense. I hate putting foundation on with my fingers because I feel like my foundation doesn’t get worked into the skin nicely like a Beauty Blender does. But I can’t resist a good internet fad, so I passed on the original and bought the cheap knock off on Amazon.

Before the sponge (if you can even call it a sponge, its more like a slab of silicone) arrived I received an email from the seller giving tips and tricks, and letting me know that the point is to compliment a Beauty Blender, not replace it. Wait, what? So the silicone sponge is a way to put your foundation on your face, but the Beauty Blender will actually finish the job.

When I used the sponge to apply the makeup to my face, I’ll be honest, it was a little awful. The foundation sat right on top of my skin. I could see every pore and line. The appearance did improve a little the more I blended, dabbed and smeared the foundation around, but as soon as I pulled out my trusty old Beauty Blender, all was right with the world again.

On the plus side, zero foundation was wasted. Every bit that touched the sponge, ended up on my face. So if you are looking for a tool to take the foundation from the bottle and on to your face with no waste, and you don’t want to just dot it on with your finger, sure, try a silicone makeup sponge. But honestly, I don’t get it and I recommend passing on the particular beauty gimmick.
