You guys. I finally discovered my holy grail of foundations, and I want to shout it from the roof tops! Finding your perfect foundation is a game changer. It took my a lot of trial and error to understand exactly what I wanted/needed and to find it. My hope would be that what I learned might make the process a little easier for others. Here are my tips to help YOU find YOUR ideal foundation.
1. Beware of Recommendations
Unless the person recommending their favorite foundation has the same skin type as you, don’t rush out to buy that foundation. What works for someone with oily skin is unlikely to be ideal for someone with dry skin. What’s great for someone with more mature skin, is probably not what you want for acne prone skin. There are so many great products out there for all different skin types, seek out something that really fits your needs.
2. Know Your Skin Type
I always felt like I had really normal skin. Not dry, not oily. Just normal. Until one day while watching a Youtube beauty guru talk about her dry skin and it occurred to me, “Wait. Maybe I have dry skin? Maybe that is why my makeup always looks heavy and cakey?” Turns out I have dry skin and have been using the completely wrong products. Once I transitioned to the correct foundation for my dry skin , I saw a huge difference in the way my makeup sat on my skin. So before you go shopping for foundation, figure out what type of skin you have and shop accordingly. It makes a HUGE difference.
3. Ask for Help
This tip is more applicable to shopping for high end makeup than drugstore. When you are at a beauty counter or store ASK FOR HELP! Let the salesperson know what you are looking for. Tell them your skin type and the level of coverage you are looking for and there is a good chance they will point you in the right direction. Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty. Try it out, on your wrist or even your face and make sure you really like the way it feels/looks on your skin. They should also be able to color match you as well. If you are shopping drugstore makeup, do a little research before you head to the store. Google something like “best foundation for dry skin” or whatever it is you are looking for. There is a ton of information out there, so don’t buy blind. Study up!
