The sun is up and you are ready for the beach… well almost, except for your translucent white legs. The worst thing about the beginning of summer is that awkward in between a little bit of color and ghostly white. A lot of us turn to sunless tanners to save the day, yet we are often given mixed results. Here are some great tips for getting an even and beautiful tan from a bottle.
1. Choose a good sunless tanner
That doesn’t mean it has to cost a fortune, but make sure it a quality one. Unfortunately finding the perfect one does require a little bit of trial and error, but I am LOVING Loreal Sublime Bronze. It is one of the very best tanners I have used and for less than $10, I love it even more!
Shower before you plan to tan and use a sugar scrub to get rid of dry skin, leaving you with a soft smooth surface to start with. (Salt scrubs can irritate your skin so be careful of using these before you sunless tan.) Also don’t forget to shave! You naturally exfoliate your skin when you shave so you don’t want to scrape you tan off shaving right after applying it. So a lot of the prep work is in the shower!
3. Dry off and while your skin is still warm apply your tanner
I am not exactly sure why having your skin warm helps but trust me it does.
4. Start with your legs
I always start on my legs because that is where I feel like I need the most color. I try to alternate which leg I started with each time. Apply less than you think you do, you can always get more, but if you have too much product that is when you will be more prone to streaking.
5. Rub, rub, rub!
I rub the lotion in until my skin is dry and it isn’t rubbing smoothly anymore. This helps to make sure that you don’t have blobs of sunless tanner left anymore. It also helps to make sure that you got it everywhere. Pay close attention to your ankles, under the ankle bone, and the edges of your feet and toes. Other common mistake areas include your elbows, the undersides of your arms, neck and around your ears. Just make sure you pay extra attention to rub it in on those spots to ensure even coverage.
6. Apply moisturizer
Last but not least after I let me tanner dry for a minute or two I apply a regular old moisturizer. This helps drier spots color to stay even. Plus it gives you a jump start to (keeping your tan looking great) for a long time.
